Enma Ai, more commonly known as Hell Girl (地獄少女, Jigoku Shōjo), is the titular protagonist of the anime series Hell Girl. She is a supernatural entity who delivers vengeance on behalf of those who submit a grudge request via the Hell Correspondence website at midnight.
Appearing as a young girl with long black hair and piercing red eyes, Ai resides in a timeless realm with her three companions: Wanyuudou, Hone Onna, and Ichimoku Ren. These individuals assist her in investigating the requester and confirming the validity of their grudge.
When Ai accepts a request, she presents the requester with a straw doll. If the requester pulls the string on the doll, Ai will ferry the target of their grudge to Hell. However, this action comes at a price: the requester's soul will also be condemned to Hell after their natural life ends. Ai does not judge the requests, instead she carries out her duty.
Ai's origins are rooted in a tragic past, stemming from a village's betrayal and sacrifice of her as a human sacrifice. This past fuels her emotionless demeanor and her commitment to her role as Hell Girl, forever bound to carry out the vengeful desires of others.
